The Social Network
Another film I saw this week was The Social Network - the best film I have seen in quite a while. I was surprised when I heard some people saying that it looked rubbish as its an Aaron Sorkin (West Wing and Charlie Wilsons war), and David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club) film and it was only ever going to be good!
The film - a story about the founders of Facebook - is increcibly well written, incredibly well cast and incredibly well acted - as well as including some incredible cinematography. Part boardroom drama, part conspiracy thriller, the film shows the backstabbing legal row among the various nerds, geeks, brainiacs and maniacs about who gets the credit and the cash. Jesse Eisenberg is AMAZING as Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake is perfect as the smooth, and slimy Sean Parker. It's full of brilliant, witty one liners, its tense, clever, cutting and contentious. As a massive Facebook-lover, I was completely sucked into this film in everyway and even found myself slightly sympathising with the most unlikeable young billionaire of my generation.
Fu*king BRILLIANT film. You have to see it. 5 popcorns.

Paranormal Activity 2
One of the films I watched this week was Paranormal Activity 2. The first one would probably be in the top 3 scariest films I have ever seen, following The Shining and The Orphanage. I cried in the cinema when watching it and slept with the light on for 5 nights afterwards. I'm 27 by the way. Anyway, when I found out the sequel was going to involve a dog AND a baby, needless to say I was preparing myself for more sleepless nights.
So the film is scary, but for me, didn't have nearly as much impact as the first one and it felt a bit like director Tod Williams was using the same tricks. But, it did replicate some of the suspenseful dread of the first film and build on the original storyline - it was quite clever how they made them fit together. You do have to have seen the first one to have seen it. Its pretty scary, and worth a watch - 3 popcorns.

Mysterious Skin and The Mist
Wanting to indulge in my love for Joseph Gordon Levitt, this weekend I watched a brilliant film called Mysterious Skin. When a teenage hustler, played by JGL, and a young man obsessed with alien abductions cross paths, together they discover a horrible, liberating truth.
Covering paedophilia and gay prostitution, at times very graphically, its pretty dark and uncomfortable to watch. But brilliantly acted, and very sensitively directed, this film is really worth watching - but maybe not with your mum. Very harrowing but also very beautiful.. a definite 8/10.
I also watched The Mist. At first I thought this might be a sequel to 1980 film The Fog , but its not.
Based on the novel by Stephen King, Thomas Jane stars in the film - when a freak storm unleashes a species of blood-thirsty creatures on a small town, a small band of citizens hole-up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. I thought it was brillliantly done and in the same kind of ilk as the remake of Dawn of the Dead (though with not as much money put into it) which I also loved. Unusually dark and gritty, with ace B-movie writing and direction from Darabont and a collection of full-on performances from a great cast - definitely one to watch. The ending is fantastic.I like the crazy preacher bitch the best.
Also 8/10/

The Town
Last night I went to see The Town at Leicester Square Vue. It has been pretty hyped up so I was expecting great things, and thankfully, I wasnt disappointed.
Directed by and starring Ben Affleck - he plays a longtime thief who, as he plans his next big job, tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down.Other familiar names were Jon Hamm (Mad men), Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) - so in all, a really strong cast, really well acted!!
Exciting, gripping, funny in parts, sad in parts, its a really good watch. My only criticism would be that it is very cheesey at times. But not enough to put you off completely.
Affleck has previously got a lot of stick (particularly from the Stone and Parker!) but he's an amazing Director, I think. If you've not seen Gone Baby Gone, also directed by Affleck (and obviously Good Will Hunting which he wrote with matt Damon) then you definitely should. Gone Baby Gone is a pretty heavy and upsetting film but was very topical around its release due to Madeline MacCann - so much so, they delayed its release.
Anyway, next up is BURIED!

Inception versus Toy Story 3
Inception is like nothing I have ever seen before. Plot summary
Amazing cast, amazing story but - and many may disagree - I think its a little bit overrated. Brilliant film though, the way people were talking about it I was expecting it to my completely blow my mind and to come out of the cinema gesticulating like a crazy person with a new look on life. Saying that, I feel compelled to see it again which perhaps is a sign it has got more under my skin than I care to admit. But I guess this is something to be discussed between me and my therapist. Either way its an absolute must-see .
(As an aside I'm a little bit in love with joseph gordon love hewitt or whatever his name is who I think is our main hero in this film.. he makes excellent lesser known films ie brick, the lookout et al)
Toy Story 3 on the other hand was the perfect film. I laughed and cried in equal measure.. its clever, funny, sensitive, sad, brilliant, exciting all at the same time. Plot summary
To conclude - I enjoyed Toy Story 3 more. Ooooo controversial!

The top 10 upcoming geek movies you don’t want to miss
The top 10 upcoming geek movies you don’t want to miss
By Boris Follow Boris on twitter on July 26th, 2010
There are certain movies that appeal to us geeks more than others and that contributed to our undefinable geek culture. Movies like Sneakers, The Matrix and War Games inspired us to look into technology and brought out our inner geek.In the following months there are a few obvious (and some less obvious) movies that you don’t want to miss. From the much talked about ‘The Social Network‘ to the still largely unknown ‘The Adjustment Bureau‘, here is my top 10 list to watch:

Get him to the Greek
I went to see Get Him to the Greek last night at Westfield. As a big fan of Forgetting Sarah Marshall I was keen to see it but slightly apprenhensive about how worth a spin off film Russell Brands character was. No need for apprehension.. it was bloody funny, and Brand was absolutely superb! As was Sean Combs AKA Pdiddy AKA Puff Daddy, and Jonah Hill. Though whilst I love Hill, his lack of chin is impressive. He has a massive face which just at some point turns into a neck, but its not clear when. The film is not a masterpiece but the last time I remember laughing this much at the cinema was The Hangover last year.
Plot
IDMB --> "Aaron Greenberg (Hill) gets things done. The ambitious 23-year-old has exaggerated his way into a dream job just in time for a career-making assignment. His mission: Fly to London and escort a rock god to L.A.s Greek Theatre for the first-stop on a $100-million tour. His warning: Turn your back on him at your own peril. British rocker Aldous Snow (Brand) is both a brilliant musician and walking sex. Weary of yes men and piles of money, the former front man is searching for the meaning of life. But that doesnt mean he cant have a few orgies while he finds it. When he learns his true love is in California, Aldous makes it his quest to win her backright before kick-starting his world domination.
As the countdown to the concert begins, one intern must navigate a minefield of London drug smuggles, New York City brawls and Vegas lap dances to deliver his charge safe and, sort of, sound. He may have to coax, lie to, enable and party with Aldous, but Aaron will get him to the Greek."
Here are some reviews, I would suggest you only pay attention to the good ones..Reviews- Rotten Tomatoes
I loved it and would definitely go see it. Ive always been on the cusp of finding Brand attractive, but he really pulled it out of the bag for me this time and now I would literally sell my gran if he would take me as his wife.

the Bad Lieutenant, the Prince of Persia, or The Ghost?
I'm playing catch up here, but over the last 2 weeks I have seen the three above films. I enjoyed all of them but Bad Lieutenant stole the show.
Prince of Persia, based on a video game, is essentially a god awful, blockbuster film - but - I shamefully enjoyed it. This naturally was in so small part due to Jake Gyllenhaal who should definitely wear less clothes more. Aside from obviously being on a protein based diet for the last 6 months, he is so charismatic and I am a big fan of his performance in Donnie Darko so he can do no wrong in my eyes. The plot is based on the video game, which follows an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Gemma Arterton is also pretty good in it and nice to look at so something for the boys as it were. In a nutshell, its pretty exciting, some good action sequences but essentially shit.
The Ghost ->
A Roman Polanski film based on a novel by Robert Harris who also wrote the screenplay, is about a public figure, accused of being a war criminal, much of whose time is spent bunkered in a chalet working on an autobiography that he hopes will salvage what’s left of his reputation. Ewan McGregor plays an unnamed ghostwriter who bags himself a commission to complete the memoirs of former PM Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), currently in freefall after being accused of giving the CIA free rein to kidnap and torture four Pakistani terror suspects. Despite some questionable accents from both Ewan M and Kim Cattral, and some pretty ridiculous twists - its enjoyable, tense and engaging. Worth a watch.
Bad Lieutenant -- >
Terence McDonagh (Nicholas Cage) is a drug- and gambling-addled detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants. German film-maker Werner Herzog has taken Abel Ferrara's 1992 saga shifted it from New York to New Orleans and cast Nicolas Cage in the old Harvey Keitel role. Out of the three cinema visits this was far and away my favourite! Partly as this much more kind of film - dark and seedy and weird - but also as it sees Nicolas cage back to form! This is the role he is best at playing - someone fundamentally fucked up. I actually think its the best I've seen him since Leaving Las Vegas. It is a Werner Herzog film (who I also love after watching Grizzly Man) so it had all the expected eccentricities of a Herzog film - cue sporadically appearing iguanas for example.
Herzog's Bad Lieutenant is mesmerising and wonky - in a good way. Herzog takes one of the oldest genre cliches in the book (the Maverick Cop Who Gets Results) and then sees how far he can twist it before it snaps. Def go see it!!!

Robin Hood, Father to a murdered son, husband to a .. etc
I foolishly agreed to go and see Robin Hood with my friend - I knew I wouldnt enjoy it but I like to be a martyr every now and then and I was also a little bit curiously. In a nutshell, its a poor mans Gladiator. The story is standard, I won't go into that - but the performances were questionable and it played host to some of the most horrifically cheesey moments you could imagine. Something I, for one, can't stomach. Russel Crowe is too old and not attractive anymore - his accent was unimaginably shit (worse than Dick Van Dykes bronx cockney in Mary P), Cate Banchlett is also too old and not quite hot enough, in my opinion. Some good moments in it though, and great fight scenes. And in Russel Crowes defense, at least he attempted an accent -Kevin Costner was just an america. Which Robin Hood was not.
Theme song (slightly redone)My favourite Robin Hood of all time is the cartoon!

which was absolutely amazing, had an amazing theme song and I had a massive crush on the fox.

Sunshine Cleaning
So, just before I start to watch Old Boy for the first time, I thought I would quickly write up about quite a sweet film, if not totally overly sentimental one, I just watched called Sunshine Cleaning with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0862846/
"In order to raise the tuition to send her young son to private school, a mom starts an unusual business -- a biohazard removal/crime scene clean-up service -- with her unreliable sister."
http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi729612313/ -- THE TRAILER
It sounds a bit crap, and actually, I can see why lots wouldnt like it - but there is something so very likeable about both of the female leads above (particularly Emily Blunt who I love in The Devil Wears Prada). And also Alan Arkin was in it - whom again i also love (particularly in Little Miss Sunshine). Amy Adams is OK, I guess...Its a very watchable film, a little depressing at times, but always touching. Particularly the relationship Amy Adams character (the former cheerleader captain now cleaning lady with a 'bastard' kid) makes with a guy with one hand. And also Emily Blunts character trying to get over the death of their mother. I did feel all warm and fuzzy inside at the end.
Definitely worth a watch if it comes on TV!!!

Sorry this is late - but.. Kick Ass [insert generic comment about how it kicked ass]
Apologies - this one is totally late and I started it a couple of weeks but .. I started so I'll finish...
A superb bank holiday was rounded off by a cinema trip to Kick Ass at Westfield. I don't think anyone needs me to tell them how amazing the film is or say the already over-used critique that it 'Kicked ass!'. Clever isnt it? But if you haven't seen it, you really should.
'Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan with a few friends and who lives alone with his father. His life is not very difficult and his personal trials not that overwhelming. However, one day he makes the simple decision to become a super-hero even though he has no powers or training' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1250777/plotsummary.
I still think Nick Cage is crap though and hasn't made a good film since Leaving Las Vegas. More specifically he offended me beyond measure in Captain Correlis Mandelin - my favourite book of all time and arguably the worst film ever made.. and the remake of The Wicker Man (another of my favourites) looked dreadful. Nicholas Cage is thus, dead to me.
I was warned off I am Love (it did look a bit pretentious and I can't take it seriously when I'm supposed to find Tilda Swinton sexy) so I think I am going to watch The Joneses, Date Night and Cemetry Junction next!!
And I will definitely actually update this more frequently!!!!

Happy Easter
Hello!
Happy (nearly) Easter People! To kick off this post and keep things thematic I thought I would start with one of my favourite Family Guy scenes of all time. When they basically insinuate that jesus's miracles got a little bit blown out of proportion...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX8IRCz-7s4
Anyways, back to the movie thing....
Ive been thinking recently that when people ask me for film advice/recommendations the list I provide would often resemble one of a serial killer. Which, as an FYI, I am not. Though I do have a penchant for very dark/horror films. Usually the more creepy (the orphanage/the shining) as opposed to the depraved (Saw V etc) but I'll watch them all - call it thrill seeking I guess. If I havent already alienated any female readers as yet, try this - I hated the Sex and the City movie. It was crap. Annnywayyy... this was a more of an aside!
So just to update you on a few rather good films I have seen of late: Firstly (yes a rather dark film), The girl with the dragon tattoo, based on the award winning crime novel by the late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson, the first in his "Millennium Trilogy". I usually wholeheartedly object to seeing a film before reading the book, but I made an exception and it was absolutely brilliant.
The summary from IMDB
"Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger's are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves."
The main actress, in all her sinewy glory, was fantastic and the plot was amazing. Its complexity kind of reminded me of Tell No One, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362225/ and was gripping from start to finish in exactly the same way. Its very violent but not in an offensive or indulgent kind of way, in my opinion - but as mentioned earlier I border on the cusp of weird/sadistical with films.
Interesting article on it here.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2010/mar/15/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo
On quite a different note I watched a rather sweet film called 'Once' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/ kind of a heartwarming musical about a bond between an immigrant lady and a musician. At first I thought it was a bit weird and budget and made me want to sick, but once you meet the leading lady you completely fall in love with her. She is one of the most naturally charismatic and likeable characters I've seen ages. Its very sweet and the songs are also lovely, so would definitely recommend it for that warm fuzzy feeling inside.
On my list to see now is Shutter Island, The Green Zone, Crazy Heart and The Blind Side. The latter I saw a trailer for today and it made me cry - but that's not hard to do. It actually looks way to sentimental to be fair. Americans are good at that.
Hope you all have a fantastic Easter. I will be spending it mostly eating chocolate, cake and biscuits as gave them all up for lent!

Mesrine, Part 1
Luckily for me LoveFilm sent me Paul Searl’s DVD’s this week by accident – a very arty (slightly pretentious) selection of foreign films including The Baaden Meinhof Complex and Mesrine. The former looked far too high brow and political for me so I opted for the latter, and what a choice on my part. Mesrine is a two-part French film about the career of French gangster Jacques Mesrine. The first part, Mesrine: Killer Instinct, which takes its title from the self-aggrandising memoir he wrote in prison in the 1970s, the second, Mesrine: Public Enemy No 1, which is what he was called by the Canadian and the French police (I will get back to you on part 2 as I have big plans to watch it this wkend).
Starting in the late 1950’s, Part 1 tracks 20-something Mesrine’s return from the Algerian War, his disillusionment and dismay at civilian life, and his inevitable descent into the criminal underworld. Mesrine is something of a Robin Hood cult hero in France - something that is certainly perpetuated in this film.
Not a film to watch with your mum and/or gran - Mesrine Part I is a 100% thrilling from the opening scene and one of the best gangster films I have seen in years. And I LOVE gangster films. Violent, sexy, at times funny and always exciting, I can’t think of anything bad to say about it, other than it ended. Thankfully part 1 and 2 were shot back to back so imminently I will be seeing how Mesrine’s story ends. Stylish, gritty and fast-paced, the success of this film is in no small part due to the superb performance by Vincent Cassel. As Jacques Mesrine – the jail-springing, wife-beating, bank-robbing, kidnapping, Arab-hating, anti-establishment poster boy of post-war France, Cassel makes what could have been just a standard gangster performance, somewhat outstanding. He is a horrible, unlikeable villain but so charismatic you can’t help but love and hate him in equal measure.
I won’t tell you the in’s and out’s of the plot as you really need to watch it. If not for Vincent Cassel’s performance then for the most awesome jail-break scene ever. Anyway – basically cheers Paul Searl – you’re not that pretentious after all!!

Good morning,
So once again I managed to completely disregard my good intentions with my blogging, but I REALLY want to stick to it this time. *Come on Fran, you can do this* I think I proved I have some level of commitment in my completion of all 5 series of The Wire - which was truly awesome and I am devastated its over. I miss you Stringer Bell, and Omar.. why did he have to go like THAT? oh god. hold me.
Anyway, good a time as any to talk about films as we just had the Oscars.. I am beyond delighted that Avatar only won the special effects awards etc, and The Hurt Locker took the awards that matter. Anyone who follows me on Twitter will know that I felt Avatar was an absolute abomination and 3 hours of my life I will never get back. The plot was Pocahontus, the script was dreadful and it was about 1.5 hours too long. Yes, yes, it was very pretty, but I would rather eat my own arse than watch it again. The Hurt Locker was brilliant.. I wouldnt say I 'enjoyed' it, as its quite harrowing and hard to watch - but its a brilliant film.
A bit gutted that Colin Firth didnt win best actor, but as a massive Jeff Bridges (thanks to the Dude) I am not sorely disappointed. Also, very pleased the Monique lady won her award as her character in Precious is probably the most horrible villain I have seen in any film. On that note, the actress who plays Precious.. I know big is beautiful or whatever, but seriously, that's a coronary disease waiting to happen, and she's only about 10.. someone should intervene... She was absolutely fantastic in it though and I read somewhere she only went for the role on a whim, so a good on her.
Some things that made me laugh so far this week..
The Daily Mail list of 'Things that give you cancer'.
Snuff Box - Boyfriend Scenes
Back soooooon xx
